Research Interest:
My research interest is self-incompatibility (SI) in Brassica. To avoid inbreeding depression and promote out-crossing, many plants have adopted self-incompatibility systems, which enable the plant to discriminate between ‘‘self’’ and ‘‘non-self’’ pollen, to maintain genetic diversity in the population. This discrimination of self and non-self between pollen and pistil is followed by selective inhibition of self-pollen germination and/or growth. I am particularly interested in utilizing the Brassica SI system to understand the molecular mechanisms behind pollen-pistil interactions. My research is to identify other components involved in the SI response in Brassica using the yeast two hybrid system for ARC1-interacting proteins, construct over-expression, RNAi-expression constructs and CRISPR-Cas9 constructs of targeting gene using binary vector that will be used for transforming Brassica; isolate the relevant genes and proteins involved in stigma development and characterize their biochemical activity.
